In the Balinese lontar manuscript Dwijendra Tattwa, it is explained that Dang Hyang Nirartha was a Hindu holy priest from the Majapahit Kingdom, who came to the island of Bali in the 16th century during the reign of King Dalem Waturenggong in Gelgel, Klungkung Bali. Where Dang Hyang Nirartha, made a holy journey (Dharmayatra) and walked along the southern coast of the island of Bali from west to east. On the trip, he finally found a beach in the Tabanan area (now called Tabanan Regency) not far from Braban Village. While on a holy journey (Dharmayatra), he saw a rock in the shape of a small island in the sea. Then it was in this place that he meditated and felt the vibration of holiness. So on the rock, he suggested building a sacred building to worship God Baruna which is the embodiment of Ida Sang Hyang Widhi Wasa as the ruler of the sea. And now it is called Tanah Lot Temple.

Tanah Lot Temple is located in Braban Village, Kediri District, Tabanan-Bali Regency, which is one of the six Sad Kahyangan Jagat Temples in Bali. Tanah Lot Temple comes from two words, namely land and lot. Tanah means small island or gili, while Lot or Lod means floating in the sea. So Tanah Lot Temple is a temple that floats on a small island. This temple is one of the temples that is very sacred for Balinese Hindus, where this temple is considered to have a high spiritual value. Around the temple area, there are a number of caves formed due to the erosion of seawater against the coral rocks. And these caves are a habitat for tame sea snakes that are believed to be the guardians of the sacred area. And it is said that the snakes are the pets of the gods who inhabit Tanah Lot Temple, therefore their existence is respected and should not be disturbed.
Located on the edge of a steep beach, Tanah Lot Temple offers an amazing view to enjoy the sunset. When the sea tide rises, this temple looks like a floating land in the middle of the ocean. Visitors who come to Tanah Lot Temple can only set foot in the temple area when the water begins to recede. Where Tanah Lot Temple does not have several courtyards, because it is built on a coral cliff plain with irregular angles, and ceremonies that take place every six months or 210 days.
