Lempuyang Temple is a sacred place for Hindus, and is one of the tourist attractions in the eastern part of the island of Bali. Besides being a sacred place, this temple has its own uniqueness such as its natural purity, as well as with a panoramic background of Mount Agung which is one of the highest mountains in Bali. As one of the Sad Kahyangan Jagat Temples in Bali, Lempuyang Temple has a long history full of mythology and spiritual values, where the existence of this temple is very closely related to the legends and ancient mythology of Bali. In the ancient Lontar Kutara Dewa Purana Bangsul, it is stated that the history of this temple began with the legend of the gods who moved the top of Mount Mahameru from India to the island of Java. The mountain fragments then formed various mountains in Java and some in Bali, including Mount Lempuyang. To maintain spiritual balance in Bali, Batara Hyang Pasupati sent his three sons and daughters to stand on several mountains, one of which was Batara Hyang Gni Jaya (God Iswara), stationed on Mount Lempuyang, making him the guardian of the east. And this concept is in harmony with the philosophy of Dewata Nawa Sanga, which regulates the direction of the cardinals on the Island of the Gods. Therefore, Lempuyang Temple not only functions as a sacred place, but also becomes one of the nine direction temples (Sad Kahyangan Jagat) that protect from negative energy.
Lempuyang Temple is located at the top of Bisbis hill, namely in Tribuana Village, Abang District, Karangasem-Bali Regency, to reach this temple visitors and Hindus who want to pray, must walk the main path in the form of stepped stairs, which reach around 1.500 steps. Lempuyang Temple is dedicated to worshiping Ida Sanghyang Widhi Wasa in her manespestasi, Dewa Iswara, who represents the power of the east. The Lempuyang Temple complex consists of seven holy places that are located on the slopes of Bisbis hill, and one of these holy places is Penataran Agung Temple, which is famous for its "Gate of Heaven" where the gate of this bendar temple offers a background view of Mount Agung which is so amazing.
The community and the local government strive to preserve the history of Lempuyang Temple, including maintaining the physical structure of the temple and performing various sacred rituals and ceremonies. For Hindus and tourists who have deceased relatives, menstruating women (menstruating), breastfeeding women, babies who are not yet 1 month old and 7 days old are not allowed to enter the local temple area, bringing or eating pork are also not allowed. And piodalan at Lempuyang Temple is celebrated every 210 days (6 months of the Balinese calendar), namely on Thursday Umanis wuku Dungulan, coinciding with the day after Galungan Day. And during the piodalan, the temple is temporarily closed to tourists (usually only for 5 days), so that Hindus can focus on praying for the blessings of salvation.
