History Of Mount Batur

Mount Batur is the second-highest active volcano on the island of Bali, with a height around 1,717 meters above sea level. The mountain was formed by a massive ancient eruption around 28,000 years ago, which created a large caldera, followed by subsequent eruptions that shaped Mount Batur as it is today. The second caldera has a diameter of about 7 kilometers. Since the 19th century, Mount Batur has erupted dozens of times, with the most recent eruption recorded in 2000. Mount Batur is an active stratovolcano, with its crater located within the caldera, and it continues to show volcanic activity at its summit.

Historical records of Mount Batur’s eruptions began in 1804 and 1821, with eruptions occurring at the main crater. Further eruptions took place in 1849 and 1888, during which lava flows reached the lake. In 1897, volcanic activity was again observed with an eruption at the main crater. In 1905, eruptions occurred from Batur I, Batur II, and Batur III craters, with lava flowing toward the south and southwest. Eruptions were also recorded consecutively in 1921, 1922, 1923, 1924, 1925, and 1926, followed by further eruptions in 1963, 1965, 1968, 1970, 1971, and 1974. On August 7, 1994, an explosive eruption occurred, accompanied by incandescent material, forming a new crater known as Crater 1994. Nearly a year later, on May 26, 1995, another eruption originated from Crater 1994 with similar explosive characteristics.

On November 8, 1997, an eruption centered at Batur III Crater, releasing dry volcanic gases observed to be bluish in color. On June 2, 1998, another eruption formed Crater 1998, located between Batur III Crater and Crater 1994. This was followed by an eruption on February 1, 1999, which created Crater 1999. A subsequent eruption on March 15, 1999 caused the ridge separating Crater 1998 and Crater 1999 to collapse, merging the two craters. The latest recorded eruption occurred on July 7, 2000, originating from Crater 1999 in the form of a Strombolian eruption. Mount Batur is not only significant for its geological features but also for its archaeological, ecological, historical, and cultural values. For this reason, the Mount Batur Caldera area, known as Batur Geopark, was designated as the first geopark in Indonesia and officially recognized by UNESCO as part of the Global Geopark Network on September 20, 2012. As a result, Mount Batur has become one of Bali’s most popular tourist destinations, offering stunning natural views of Lake Batur from higher elevations.

Mount Batur is located in Kintamani District, Bangli Regency, Bali, and can be accessed by motorbike or car.
